As he exited the mound after one inning of all star work in what is, in reality, a meaningless game, Roberto Osuna felt like he had delivered one of the clutch performances of his young career.
“I’m going http://www.jaysfanaticsjersey.com/ja-happ-jersey-c-7.html
to be honest with you, I felt like the strongest guy in the world,” the 22 year old Blue Jays closer said after allowing one hit in the American League’s 2 1 win over the National League on Tuesday night at Marlins Park.
“I was really excited, really happy. It was a dream come true today.”
In the past year , Osuna has pitched in the post season, the World Baseball Classic and now the all star game.
And to top it off, he was going against players he idolized as a youngster. It was quite a rush for Osuna and quite a run of late for a pitcher well on his way to establishing himself as one of the top closers in the game.
“I was just really thankful for the situation I was in Michael Saunders Jersey
, playing against Yadier Molina, guys that I grew up watching and playing with Robinson Cano on the same team,” said Osuna, who is riding a streak of 21 consecutive saves with the Jays. “It was meaning everything for me.
“Obviously, I feel proud of myself in all that I have done this year,” Osuna said. “Hopefully we can make the post season again.”
Marcus Stroman wasn’t at the all star game, though he would have much preferred a trip to South Florida than the exotic locale he ventured to for the break. It was a slight that the Jays starter emphasized rather forcefully this past Sunday as a blatant snub given his strong season.
That didn’t prevent Stroman from being a topic of conversation here regarding other recent pointed comments he made regarding the composition of baseballs.
After leaving a July 3 game vs. the Yankees early with a minor blister issue, Stroman said the problem is with the baseball’s being used. Fellow Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez has been dogged by blister issues all season.
“This is a relatively new thing that just emerged with the Toronto people,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told Baseball Writers of America http://www.jaysfanaticsjersey.com/aaron-sanchez-jersey-c-9.html
members at their annual all star game luncheon. “I’ve asked my folks to take a look at the seams. Rather than shoot from the hip, I’m aware of the issue. I just don’t know what the answer is. It literally has come up within the last week.”
BROTHERS IN BLUE
Count fellow Jays representative Osuna among those happy for first baseman Justin Smoak both making the game and performing well.
“I’m so happy for him because he’s had some tough years,” Osuna said. “Bouncing back like this and making this game is huge for us.
“I’m proud of him and hopefully he can keep continuing in the second half like this.”
When he pitched the seventh inning for the American League, Osuna became the youngest Jay to participate in the Midsummer Classic, allowing one hit. Dave Stieb previously held that mark for youngest.
The pair marked the smallest Jays contingent at the game since Jose Bautista was the solo representative in that 2011 game.
A year ago in San Diego http://www.jaysfanaticsjersey.com/roberto-osuna-jersey-c-8.html
, there were five Jays on the AL team, with three getting the nod the previous season. This year’s game snapped a three year streak for Josh Donaldson, who appeared twice with the Jays and once with the Oakland A’s.
Sanchez won’t have to wait long to shake off the effects of his ugly return from a lengthy stay on the disabled list. Sanchez, who was rocked for eight runs in 1.2 innings on Friday, will get the start when the Jays return from the all star break Friday in Detroit. The rest of manager John Gibbons’ rotation for the three game series will see Francisco Liriano go on Saturday followed by Marco Estrada on Sunday … Given the heavy Latin influence in South Florida, it was a nice touch for MLB to honour Latin hall of famers in a pre game ceremony. What didn’t smell so great was not showing highlights of Jays great Robbie Alomar in a Toronto jersey.
NOTHING ON THE LINE
So much for the all star game being the only one of the big four professional sports with some skin on the line for the winning team.
For the first time since 2003, the winning team in Tuesday’s game would not secure home field advantage in the World Series for the respective league winner.
Instead — and as it should be — the pennant winner with the best regular season record will get the advantage. For many, it’s a case of good riddance.
“I don’t care,” said National League and Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto. “I thought it was silly. World Series home field advantage predicated on this game didn’t really follow logically, I didn’t think.”
Last night’s rendition of O Canada, the latest example of why anthems are an unnecessary distraction at sporting events, came with the bizarre “performance” Calgary singer Jocelyn Alice gave. Of particular annoyance, Alice appeared to giggle after the line “God keep our land,” prompting a startled response and apparent death stare from Smoak, that fired up social media. Not so fast folks. Smoak admitted afterwards that he didn’t notice a thing. “ The anthems were the least of my worries,” Smoak said. The questionable rendition came a year after a rogue member of The Tenors decided to make up his own lyrics … Votto came in as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
